Why logistics dominates
Indoor goods transport has properties that almost no other service application shares, and they explain the 102,900 units directly.
- The environment is controlled. A warehouse floor is flat, mapped, lit and free of public traffic, which removes most of the perception and safety difficulty that defeats robots elsewhere.
- The task is repetitive and measurable. Moving a tote from A to B has an unambiguous success condition and a countable output, which makes a business case easy to write.
- Labour is scarce and the work is unpopular. Walking 12 km a shift is a position that is hard to fill in many markets.
- The safety framework exists. ISO 3691-4 covers driverless trucks, so the compliance route is established rather than improvised.
- The return is countable. Trips per hour multiplied by a labour rate is a calculation a finance function accepts.
The hospitality decline of 11 % is the mirror image. Public environments carry unpredictable people, no established safety framework tailored to the task, weaker labour economics and a much harder business case, and the numbers reflect that.
The channel is changing faster than the segments
Traditional sales remain the main route to market, and the service-based channel is growing far faster: the robot-as-a-service fleet expanded 31 % and that monetisation channel grew 42 % in 2024. Three reasons make service robots particularly suited to it.
- Customers lack engineering capacity. A hotel, a hospital or a distribution centre rarely has robotics engineers, so a package including deployment and maintenance is what makes adoption possible at all.
- Demand is variable. Seasonal peaks in logistics and hospitality suit a model where capacity can be added and removed.
- Technology is moving. Renting transfers obsolescence risk to the supplier, which matters where product generations are short.
Professional against consumer
The two halves of the service robot market are usually reported together and behave nothing alike.

Mixing the two produces meaningless statements. A market described as tens of millions of units is a consumer market; one described in hundreds of thousands at four to six figures per unit is a capital goods market, and only the second is what a professional buyer is participating in.
